Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (DVD) Review

sonic 2

Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz) settles into life in Green Hills, Montana with his loving parents Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter), but soon discovers himself on the wrong side of an unsettling cosmic threat.

Director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Casey and Josh Miller do an admirable job of recreating the video game’s unique tone and aesthetic. The most captivating scenes, such as a thrilling third act, stay true to the games’ core message.

Review

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a family film designed to be enjoyable for everyone. Based on a video game character, it teaches kids about teamwork and responsibility through humor that’s often featured in children’s television shows.

Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) returns to Earth with his Earth foster parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). Since defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic has been striving to gain the respect of those close to him in Green Hills by sneaking out at night as “Blue Justice” and fighting crime in Seattle.

Dr. Robotnik returns from the Mushroom Planet with Knuckles the red echidna (Idris Elba), embarking on an epic action-packed quest that also becomes a quest for a Chaos Emerald which could destroy entire civilizations. Luckily for Sonic and company, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) also joins them in this epic journey.

Although the comedy’s fast-paced action scenes may seem over the top, the movie still manages to make its point without feeling too corny or gimmicky. Sonic and his friends’ chemistry is palpable, yet eventually the story starts dragging – that’s when I started questioning its overall quality.

Summary

After defeating his archenemy Robotnik in the first film, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) has finally gained his freedom and settled into life in Green Hills with guardians Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). But soon enough his old enemy Dr. Eggman returns to Earth with Knuckles the echidna as an ally, seeking an emerald that will give him ultimate control of Earth for world dominance.

Thankfully, the movie doesn’t let that become a distraction and lets its various plot threads flow naturally. There’s an intense fight scene between Sonic and Knuckles which serves to demonstrate how well the filmmakers have respected the original video games while adding plenty of new elements.

Sonic 2 offers plenty of wry humor and the human characters often provide enjoyable counterpoints to the speedy hedgehog. Unfortunately, at times the action comedy feels too much like a self-consciously stylish nod to its predecessors.

Parents should be aware of the frequent near drownings and scenes with real-life machinery flying through the air that might be frightening for young children. While the cartoonish violence will likely not have any lasting effect on kids, its perilous nature does raise some concerns.

Final Words

Sonic the Hedgehog has become one of pop culture’s most beloved characters, and for good reason: He’s a speedster-fueled speedster who imparts lessons about relying on friends and family, growing up well, and setting an example. Additionally, this little blue blaze has appeared in various genres from video games to comic books to TV shows.

Next month, when the video game-inspired sequel Sonic 2 hits theaters, expect many familiar callbacks to the original series. Not just for humor: The plotline also references elements of the franchise’s lore – including Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) twisted plans for world dominance.

Knuckles (Idris Elba) is tricked into harboring a grudge against Sonic by Knuckles (Idris Elba). To bring about his plan, Sonic plans on using the Master Emerald–an unimaginable source of power capable of bringing anything into reality. This suggests this is not simply an isolated prank but part of an ultimate strategy for taking over Earth and ultimately even the universe.

Sonic and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) ultimately triumph over Robotnik’s Death Egg Robot by freeing the Chaos Emeralds it had forged into Super Sonic. At the end of the movie, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles join them as guardians of Master Emerald power.
