For the better part of 10 years, CyberConnect2’s Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series immediately impressed with its gorgeous visuals and love for the original source material, which eventually led to a series that sold an astounding 15 million copies in six installments! The challenge of capturing the same enthralling quality of the series isn’t an straightforward task, however Demon Slayer Mobile Games: The Hinokami Chronicles is the spiritual successor fans like me were waiting for.
Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is a 3D arena-based fighting game that was developed by CyberConnect2 and was published by SEGA. Based on the original manga written by Koyoharu Gotouge, the series has become one of Shonen’s most popular series. With an anime adaptation by UFOTOTALY, the most-grossing animated film of 2021 and recently, a console-based video game developed by a renowned game developer, it’s apparent this Demon Slayer mobile games is a major hit for the anime community! All the stars align for Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chroniclesto be a fantastic experience, but will the console version of this game surpass this amazing high standard?
Demon Slayer Mobile Games the Hinokami Chronicles retells the events from beginning with the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc, all the way up down to Mugen Train arc. You are in control of Tanjiro Kamado, whose world is turned upside down after he discovers that his entire family was killed by a demon. The only survivor is his sister Nezuko and he finds out that while her life was spared but she was turned into a demon. With newfound resolve, Tanjiro aspires to become the Demon Slayer to not only kill the demon who slaughtered his family but also seek out a way of turning Nezuko back into a human.
I’ll admit that I’m not the greatest person who enjoys Demon Slayer mobile games. It’s not to say that the story is bad , but it’s not but it’s a typical Shonen setup with a resolute protagonist with a purpose to motivate them throughout the entire series. Not a poor effort though I’ve read similar stories many times before. However the thing that makes Demon Slayer mobile games stand out and the reason I believe it’s extremely popular is due to its varied cast of characters. Many of them are a joy to watch for any reason, be it Zenitsu having severe panic attacks over the most mundane things, Inosuke being a parody of other shonen protagonists who think of nothing but fighting, Shinobu’s steadfast positive manner of speaking to the point that it’s almost disturbing and on and on! It also applies to the numerous adversaries Tanjiro is forced to combat, who regularly have a sympathetic backstory to shed light on why they behave the way they do.
It’s a shame that the weakest of them is our hero, Tanjiro. I wasn’t averse to him, but he’s just boring. His unique traits extend to having a strong sense smell, a hard head that’s frequently used to headbutt people along with… that’s all. Like you would expect, He is determined to never give up and has a heart that is strong, but these kinds of qualities are a dime dozen for protagonists that belong to this genre. What makes him stand out is the fact that his motive is a noble one, and he puts the needs of others first, to the point of frequently being a sympathetic figure to the monsters who he battles. This is a great way to support him and his progress! Before you ask yes. Nezuko is adorable and despite the fact that she doesn’t say much she is the emotional foundation of the story. I was eager to see her return to her normal.
Now comes the big question which is: can Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chroniclesserve as a good way to experience this story in the beginning? The answer is a little complicated. All the important beats in the story are covered within the game’s narrative, though it’s definitely an abridged version of the story. But I do like the fact that the game gives you the option of seeing scenes that aren’t covered by the game using what’s known as Memory Fragments. The reason for this kind of confusion is because of some of them being unlocked later in the game, meaning scenes in the early stages of the story are blocked off until you get to an earlier point in the game’s narrative. It’s not a good idea. Regardless, the game is an effective way to gain an encapsulated version of the Demon Slayer mobile gamesstory!

Gameplay – Story Mode
Every arc of Demon Slayer Mobile Games: The Hinokami Chroniclesis separated into chapters and in order to be able to finish the game, players be required to complete all eight chapters. It’s not surprising that the narrative is often slow and you are often being forced to watch a plethora of cutscenes along with already explained adventure segments before you can fight any monsters. The times that you are forced to disarm your sword are one of the greatest moments of the adventure! This is especially true with the fantastic boss battles that the game offers! Each of these battles has an element that is unique to add spice to the battle regardless of whether you are using your movements to avoid massive attacks or facing more than one boss at the same time. These fights conclude with a stunningly designed interactivity cutscene that is based on CyberConnect2’s renowned quick-time event sequences. There’s a little small nitpick However, as impressive as these final sections of boss fights are I was shocked to discover there were some fast-time event sequences are only requiring one or two button presses that is quite different from the previous titles from CyberConnect2.
In addition to the main story There are also special monsters to battle as you complete each chapter. While they’re completely optional, I found these enjoyable because of their difficulty and unique mechanics including the one that inflicts poison while attacking! It’s a good thing, as most of the single-player campaigns is simple. There is a very small chance of dying due to attacks being regularly signaled in advance and can be avoided when timed correctly. The game is thankfully harder towards the end but this problem will not hinder the fun boss fights.

I had to constantly keep in mind that this wasn’t an 2D animated game, due to the way in which the art style of the anime changed to a 3-dimensional space! The animation, whether it be a humorous story sequence or a final attack with unbelievably impressive production values it was awe-inspiring! The game isn’t perfect, however: while the environments you’ll explore within the game’s story modes are all distinct and packed with details There were some moments of texture popping-in. But this is a minor nitpick when compared to how incredible the game looks in motion!
Surprisinglyenough, the loading times were fairly decent, even on the PlayStation 4. It took about 10 to 15 minutes, regardless of whether it was a story mode cutscene or a multiplayer game, which is a huge credit to the performance improvement on older platforms! The game is played with a solid 30 frames a second. While some people will scoff at this, particularly considering it being a combat game, I felt that it added an cinematic vibe and allowed it to be more faithful to the original source material!
The music is also a great feature! In addition to the fact that the game utilize some of the pieces of the now famous anime soundtrack and the original music compositions for the game perfectly match the tone too and I never got tired of listening to the same battle songs when I was playing online with my friends for over 20 matches in a row! It’s a first for a licensed anime game, the game also received an audio track that has each of English and Japanese voice acting from the beginning. While I initially was watching the anime in its original Japanese language, the English voice cast does great job in the role, with Bryce Papenbrook as Inosuke being a clear highlight for me! It’s no effortless to portray Inosuke’s constant exuberant energy however I believe Byrce absolutely nailed it with his performance! However, I must discuss Zach Aguilar’s portrayal of the character’s protagonist, Tanjiro. Although he does a good job for the most part but when he has to yell or show intense emotions such as anger or crying his voice and tone do not match with the rest of his performance. It reached the point where the moment these events occurred, he almost sounded like it was as if he were playing a distinct character. This was extremely distracting!
To be honest with you, I’m put between a rock and a hard spot by Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. This is a 3D fighting game by one of my top game studios , with a cult anime franchise to back it. I was sold from the first moment it was announced in March of 2020! Its release with one of the top game companies, SEGA and SEGA, certainly didn’t help too! It’s true that I had a blast of having fun playing it even though I’m the biggest fan of Demon Slayer mobile games in comparison to Naruto however, there are some serious issues which prevent it from being an absolute success. There is no online option and the delay in input and the slow-paced plot deter me from making a positive recommendation, however I am aware more than anyone else that there’s a market for a game that is similar to this.
